How we got started

We started in January of 07 with the idea of using one of our buildings to raise worms. We are in this with LeRoy and Carol Haberl. We started researching the Internet for information on raising the worms. We found lots of information and talked to lots of people in the industry. One source of information was Robert Lees of Arpeggio Farms in Mingo, Iowa. We toured his set up and decided to go ahead with our plans to sell organic fertilizer, called worm castings. Castings are the manure that the worms produce. See about the casting for more information.

We started with 10,31 gallon totes with 2 lbs of Red Wigglers in each tote. This was in May of 2007. We sifted, See about sifting our totes in October 2007 and went from 10 to 41, 31 gallon totes. The worms have to be kept in at least 70 degrees in the winter. This spring we are planning to move it from our basement to a bigger area in the barn. We are not going to use totes this time. Instead we are going to use bunkers that are 4’x 8’x20’’. Roughly 15 totes will fit into a bunker, this will make this a little easier to work with. By the end of 2008 we should have 12-15 or more bunkers. We plan to sift every three months.
